Throwback Thursday: When Platinum Stars shocked Al Ahly in the 2008 CAF Champions League

For Throwback Thursday we take you back to one of the biggest shocks in CAF Champions League history between the now-defunct Platinum Stars and Al Ahly.

After Silver Stars finished the 2007/08 season as league runners-up to Mamelodi Sundowns, they were rewarded with a debut campaign in Africa's elite club competition.

Led by the former league-winning coach of Miguel Gamondi, the club who were acquired by Royal Bafokeng Nation, were renamed to Platinum Stars and enjoyed a memorable run in the competition.

Having breezed through the opening two rounds with 4-1 and 3-1 victories over Lesotho Correction Services and US Stade Tamponnaise - Egyptian giants Al Ahly awaited the rookies.

However, the team spearheaded in attack by Simba Marumo and Koketso Mmotong held their own in the opening leg with an inspiring display against Manuel Jose's side at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium.

With the likes of club legend Flavio, Mohamed Aboutrika, Gilberto, Mohamed Barakat in the starting XI, it was the diminutive Stanley Kgatla who stole the show on a historic afternoon in Atteridgeville.

Mmotong stunned the visitors just after the hour mark with the opening goal, before Dikwena were pegged back by Emad Meteb seven minutes before time for a vital away goal.

But not to be denied against their illustrious opposition, veteran midfielder Edward Williams popped up with an injury-time winner after being teed up with the inspirational Marumo.

The Red Devils went on to overturn the tie the following week in Cairo with a 2-0 win but the memories created on that afternoon against one of the greatest African squads of all-time will remain forever.
