"When I saw the pairing from CAF of PWD Bamenda against Kaizer Chiefs I knew PWD did not stand a chance of measuring against them," Ekonde tells snl24.com/kickoff.
"They are well known in South Africa and also some stints in the CAF inter-club competitions despite not being as competitive as they used to be before.
"The match was heavily dominated by PWD yesterday though. They had the power, possession, touches, but they were very unrefined in front of goal, they couldn't capitalise on their chances.
"A glaring example would be the penalty they missed in the last part of the game, that was obviously a real chance for an equaliser. Derick Burinyuy looked really immature in front of Itumeleng Khune, who's well known on the continent. I think he did a great job to save that."
Ekonde added that there may have been some unrealistic expectations from the home fans and expects Chiefs to breeze through when PWD travel to South Africa for the return leg on Friday, 4 December.
"From a Cameroon press perspective, many fans left the Limbe Sports Ground frustrated that PWD could not get a draw at least," he explained.
"They expected them to win the game as it was their first time in CAF competitions since beating TP Mazembe in the Confederation Cup in 2004. Many people are still disappointed but understand that the 2020/21 league is yet to start after the last campaign ended eight months ago.
"I do believe in Johannesburg it will be a different ball-game because Khune talked about the heatwave in Cameroon that disturbed them from playing their natural game."
