Why fans are turning off from Bafana

Football legend Linda 'Mercedes Benz' Buthelezi opines that the ongoing disharmony between SAFA and the PSL is the reason for fans no longer attending Bafana Bafana matches.

A huge gap in attendance figures were apparent for Saturday's Bafana Bafana and Springbok rugby events.

A poorly attended FNB Stadium as Bafana hosted Sierra Leone was a stark contrast to the sold-out Kings Park Stadium as the Springboks defeated Argentina.

"How can fans fill a stadium if those who are in charge of the game don't show them any respect?" Buthelezi tells KickOff.

"All this is caused by ongoing fights between SAFA and the PSL.

"Remember if a Mom and Dad fight it's the kids that suffer.

"Each time these two organisations are involved in a fight, as fans we become distraught.

"Why as a fan, should I support the national team when these two parties don't take it seriously?

"Even players don't get motivated when their clubs don't celebrate their selection to the national team.

"Players just go there to honour the call-up.

"Don't forget in South Africa as fans we love our clubs more than our national team.

"As South Africans, we have destroyed the national team's product.

"Even the support Bafana Bafana enjoyed in 1996 was based on club level because those fans who filled the stadiums were from only three clubs, Kaizer Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates.

"Even the players most of them were from those three clubs.

"So, most fans supported Bafana because they were following players who were playing for their favourite clubs.

"Even currently just look at how many people attend Chiefs, Sundowns and Pirates match."
