Zwane addresses age concerns after Bafana return

Veteran midfielder Themba Zwane has addressed concerns over his age after delivering a match-winning performance on his return to the Bafana Bafana squad.

On Saturday, Mamelodi Sundowns star Themba Zwane made his first appearance for South Africa since March last year when he started and starred in Bafana Bafana's 4-0 friendly win over Sierra Leone at the FNB Stadium.

The 33-year-old, who had previously been overlooked by national team head coach Hugo Broos over age concerns, marked his return the fold by netting twice either side of half-time, with club teammate Aubrey Modiba and debutant Mihlali Mayambela scoring the other goals on the day.

Following the match, Zwane, who is the oldest player in the current Bafana squad, insisted that his age was not a negative factor and that he planned to continue competing at the highest level for the foreseeable future.

"Age is nothing but a number, but it's all about how you carry yourself," Zwane told the SAFA media team. "The top players overseas encourage us, they are old now but they are still playing at the highest level. I can make an example of Thiago Silva who is 37 and still playing at Chelsea. Dani Alves is still performing.

"So, I told myself that if those guys can still be pushing themselves, why not? I'm not still going to push myself as long as my legs allow me to go on. I will still go. I'm just trying to be a good example to the youngsters and show that if you are serious about your career, you can go far."
