Makgopa to report for duty with Soweto giants

Makgopa is the Bafana squad due to play in the 2023 AFCON qualifier against Morocco on June 9 in Rabat.

Upon his return from North Africa, the 21-year-old will head back home to Limpopo to pack his bags for Johannesburg where he will be joining Orlando Pirates.

Despite interest from Greece, he signed for Pirates last year with The Bucs then allowing him to continue at Baroka for the season.

His handlers brought an offer from the Greek club matching what Baroka chairman Khurishi Mphahlele had asked for but a deal to Pirates was already agreed upon in principle.

Through the season that Pirates allowed him to spend with Bakgaga, he scored just thrice with the Limpopo relegated to the GladAfrica Championship.

At Pirates, he has been handed a vastly improved package to what he was earning at Baroka.

Makgopa – whose first name is Sekotori and the second born of four kids (Promise, Phetehego and Kgabi) in his family, was also the subject of enquiries from Kaizer Chiefs and another club in Egypt.

Born in Dikolong Hospital, Driekop near Burgersfort his roots are in Ga-Mampa Village in Sekgobela Section he spent two years of his school-going years in Mhluzi, Middelburg where his father worked as a policeman.

He was brought to Baroka after being spotted by the club's former CEO Morgan Mammila, who is now pursuing his interests in coaching at Chippa United.

The contents of his contract with Pirates will be disclosed by this website next month.

Pirates' season ends today with their last league match against SuperSport United.

They are then expected back for pre-season during the month of June with the season due to start on August 6 with the MTN8 quarterfinals while league games get underway the following week.

Pirates have already qualified for the MTN8 with the game against Matsatsantsa to then determine whether they finish third, fourth, fifth or sixth.
