'I’m still pinching myself' - Bafana star Lyle Foster opens up on record-breaking transfer

Bafana Bafana Striker Lyle Foster has opened-up to officially being South Africa's most expensive footballer after sealing a record-breaking move to Championship side Burnley in January.

Foster joined from Belgian Pro League outfit Westerlo in January for a fee reported to be worth €7m (R131m) and go up to €10m (R187m) with add-ons.

The astronomical fee is the highest ever paid for a South African player – breaking a record previously held by Benni McCarthy, whom Celta Vigo forked out €6 million for to pry him away from Ajax Cape Amsterdam in 1999.

"Being South Africa's most expensive player, I try not to think about it too much, to be honest," Foster said.

"I just want to play football and enjoy it. [I'm] happy to be in the UK, hopefully, I can have a long and fruitful career there and just continue working hard and try my best as possible to go as far as I can."

Foster has far made 11 appearances for Vincent Kompany's Burnley, contributing one goal and one assist so far.

The Clarets were knocked out of the FA Cup at the quarter-finals stage by Manchester City on Friday, but have enjoyed better fortunes in the league where sit at the top of the table and are in pole position for automatic promotion.

Reflecting on his stay in the United Kingdom, the striker said it still feels surreal.

"I'm still pinching myself, Just very happy at the moment, very grateful for everything that's happening in my life and year, we can speak for hours about how grateful I am but I think I need to shift my focus now to the game on Friday and Tuesday. Just very expected to be back home," Foster added.

Bafana Bafana will take on Liberia on Friday at the Orlando Stadium.
