Bafana's AFCON qualification path confirmed

Bafana will go into the hat amongst the 48 countries to be drawn into 12 groups from which the winners and runners-up will proceed to the finals in Cote d'Ivoire from June 23 – July 23 next year.

Tuesday, April 19, 2022 (17h30) has been set as the date for the draw.

CAF has also reviewed the order of dates for the fixtures.

Instead of four qualifiers being played during the May 30 – June 14 FIFA calendar dates, CAF has confirmed that only two fixtures will be played.

The third and fourth matches of the qualifiers will now be slotted in for September 19-27 with the last two matches being played on March 20-28 next year, which will be three months before the tournament.

Hugo Broos, the Bafana coach has already declared that qualification for the AFCON finals is non-negotiable regardless of who they face in the qualifiers.

Bafana finds themselves in Pot Two for the qualification draw and could face any of the top 12 ranked countries on the continent – Senegal, Morocco, Nigeria, Egypt, Tunisia, Cameroon, Algeria, Mali, Cote d'Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Ghana, and DRC along with two additional lower teams.

The senior national team failed to qualify for the last tournament held in Cameroon with Ghana and Sudan advancing from their group which also featured Sao Tome and Principe.

CAF has also revealed that the draw for the 2022 Women's Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2022 finals will be held on April 25.

Banyana Banyana are already through to their thirteenth finals and will be in pot one for the draw meaning they will avoid Nigeria and Morocco.

The top four teams in Morocco will qualify for the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

Then the official draw for the qualifiers of the CHAN Algeria 20223 will be on April 28 with South Africa going into the hat again.
