Barca thrash Sevilla to close in on Real Madrid

FC Barcelona thrashed Sevilla 4-1 to go two points behind LaLiga leaders Real Madrid on Sunday evening.

Ronald Araujo, Inigo Martinez, Gavi and Frenkie De Jong completed the changes highlighted by the visitors from their last match in the Copa del Rey against Valencia CF.

Barcelona surged in front on seven minutes when Inigo knocked a cross-field ball in the box from Raphinha back to Robert Lewandowski to stab in at the far post.

The lead lasted a minute as Saul raced down the right of the area having beaten the offside trap and cutback for Ruben Vargas to tap in and levelled.

Barcelona were thrown a spanner in the works inside the half-hour mark and introduced Pau Cubarsi in place of the injured Araujo.

With the break fast-approaching, Sevilla threatened when Dodi Lukebakio's overhead kick from the area urged Wojciech Szczesny to a stern save.

Gavi, who just returned to full fitness, was sacrificed a minute in the second half by manager Hansi Flick and saw Fermin Lopez take his place.

Fermin made an instant impact from his very first touch when he met a floated ball to the centre of the box by Pedri and nodded in from close-range.

Barcelona extended the lead as Raphinha stepped a yard to the edge of the box to beat a 50-50 challenge and rifled into the far corner of the net.

The joy turned sour over the five-minute spell when the referee upgraded a yellow to a red card on Fermin who was caught lunging into an opponent.

It didn't affect the rhythm at all but saw the Blaugrana grabbed a fourth goal in the final minute when Eric Garcia sneaked in the near post to head home a cross.

Barca went on to their third win on the bounce and moved two points from the league leaders and rivals Real Madrid.
