Newcastle bag first major trophy in 70 YEARS!

Newcastle United secured their first major trophy since 1955 after defeating Liverpool 2-0 in the final of the Carabao Cup on Sunday evening.

Surprisingly, the Reds named first-choice goalkeeper Alisson Becker on the bench and started Caoimhin Kelleher with Jarell Quansah at right-back, while Alexander Isak and Sandro Tonali completed the Magpies make-up.

Tonali nearly worked the opening in the middle of the first period with a first-time shot from a cross-field pass, but he went well of the mark.

Liverpool were under further pressure a little later and needed a stern save from Kelleher to thwart Bruno Guimaraes making the most of a corner-kick.

It remained intense throughout the course of the opening half, as the Reds struggled to get in rhythm and in-behind the defensive lines of the Magpies.

Magpies made their momentum count on the stroke of halftime when Dan Burn nodded a pin-point delivery from Kieran Trippier in the bottom-corner.

Liverpool's slow start continued after the break and conceded again as Isak turned in a rebound from Kelleher, but it was ruled out for offside.

The Swedish ace made amends few minutes later after picking up a knockdown at the back-post from Jacob Murphy and slammed in the bottom-corner.

In response, the Reds introduced Darwin Nunez from the bench for Diogo Jota and Curtis Jones in the place of Ibrahima Konate.

However, the Magpies continued on the attack and forward runs of Isak, Murphy, Guimaraes and Tonali unsettled the rear-guard of the Merseyside heavyweights.

Liverpool didn't give up hope three minutes in added time as substitute Federico Chiesa ran onto a through pass from Harvey Elliott and slotted in, with the goal awarded on review.

There were no comeback though as the Magpies secured the win and ended a 70-year wait for a major trophy.
