Ex-Downs trialist happy to be back in PSL

Zimbabwean striker Junior Zindonga is excited to be back into the PSL after his ill-fated stay with Maritzburg United.

Zindonga is back to South Africa after signing with Marumo Gallants during the past transfer window period in January.

The Zimbabwean striker spent only one year with Maritzburg United during the 2017/18 season, before returning to Harare, where he had spells with Ngezi Platinum Stars and Yadah FC.

He went to play in Eswatini at the beginning of 2024/25 and joined Nsingizini Hotspurs, where he helped the club qualify for the CAF Confederation Cup.

The 26-year-old had trials with Mamelodi Sundowns prior to linking up with the Team of Choice, now named Durban City.

Zindonga remains grateful for the opportunity to work with coach Fadlu Davids during his brief spell in South Africa a few years ago.

"I wouldn't say something went wrong. Such things happen in football. It was a great experience for me, it helped develop me into the player I am now. I worked with coach Fadlu Davids and coach Maahier (Davids), they encouraged me to use my strength, use my abilities, and believe in myself," Zindonga tells KickOff.com.

"Nothing wrong. The time I went there I was 19 years old. I was still young and developing. If you look at the group of players at Maritzburg United at that time, the majority are still playing in the league, the competition was tough, and breaking into the team was difficult, but learning and competing against them at training really shaped the player I am today.

"I am happy with the experience I gained and they always say there is the right timing for everything in life," he added.

Zindonga made his debut for Marumo Gallants during the Betway Premiership match against AmaZulu in Durban on February 7. However, it was the league fixture against Sundowns in Bloemfontein about a fortnight ago that caught the attention of local fans in the City of Roses.

"I am happy to be at Marumo Gallants. I am very grateful for the opportunity that the coaches and the chairman gave me to play for the club. The players have been welcoming. The players and the captain Edgar (Manaka) have helped me to settle in and the players from Zimbabwe are here.

"To play in front of Siwelele supporters is unbelievable. It's unreal," he said.
