In the latest edition of My Locker Room Secrets, KickOff catches up with former Kaizer Chiefs striker David Zulu.
The 37-year-old won the 2014/15 Premier Soccer League title with Amakhosi under Stuart Baxter.
Who was always late?
"We had a lot of latecomers in that Chiefs team, Siphiwe Mtsweni, Levy Mokgothu, and Hendrick Ekstein they always arrived on the rush hour. I believe they were staying together. I think it had to do with their lifestyle more than anything else. Maybe they used to stay up until late at night."
Any interesting rituals before they played?
"I don't know if I should call it a ritual or a habit (laughs), I used to first put on my left boot before my right one. Even now I'm still doing it.
"What happened is, at one stage while I was still at Black Leopards I did the same thing and I scored a hat-trick that day. So I kept on doing that hoping to repeat the same performance (laughs.)"
Who was the jokester?
"We had a lot of characters, Ovidy Karuru never took any conversation seriously. He would tell people they still have a lot to do when it comes to playing football.
"George Maluleka was also a character. Then there was Itumeleng Khune who took the cup when it came to being funny. I have never seen him coming to training in a bad mood. He was always loud.
"Unlike Siphelele Mthembu who was very fond of his Bible, and always quoting verses (laughs)."
Was it a muti-change room?
"It was a vibey change room where everybody did his own thing in private and minded their own business.
"George Lebese and George Maluleka were always together.
"Ovidy Karuru, Willard Katsande and Hendrick Eksteen, Mtsweni, Moleko also had their own group because they were staying in the same complex.
"Mashamaite, Mathoho... they also had their group.
"But once we were in the change room you couldn't notice all that, we were a team."
Who was the singer?
"All these youngsters from the development, they use to make us sing songs they learned in the Chiefs development."
Who was the best dressed and worst dressed?
"(Laughs) You are asking a wrong person about clothes. But the likes of Tsepo Masilela, Bernard Parker, and Siyanda Xulu, were always in their Louis Vuittons, but the problem was at the club you were not allowed to wear the other brands other than Nike, you had to wear maybe, a Nike tracksuit.
"But as for me I was always wearing my bucket hat, I was not that big on fashion."
Who never showered?
"Most of the guys never took a shower. They would ask you, why do you want me to shower? What did you put in the shower that you want to see harming me? How is it your business?"
Rate the coaches team talk?
"At Chiefs, I was coached by Stuart Baxter and Steve Komphela. And both of them gave a detailed team talk.
"Though Stuart's team talk was more on controlling the game, and how are we going to influence the game.
"Then coach Steve's team talk concentrated more on how we must stop the opponents from hurting us. He told you more about the opponents."
