South Africa qualified for the CAF under-20 Cup of Nations quarter-finals following a 1-1 draw against Zambia on Friday evening.
Amajita made two changes from the win over Sierra Leone, as Langelihle Phili came in for Thato Sibiya while Kultwano Letlhaku was introduced ahead of Shakeel April.
The match didn’t lack action in the early stages, as the South Africans grabbed the opener on eight minutes when Letlhaku applied a deft finish from a one-touch move involving Mfundo Vilakazi.
The lead lasted four minutes as the young Chipolopolo struck the equaliser in equally superb fashion where Bonephanseo Phiri pounced on a cross-field delivery and fired past goalkeeper Fletcher Smythe-Lowe.
Amajita remained in the game despite surrendering the lead so early, while the Zambians looked promising on the counter-attack and maintained a balanced approach.
Phili nearly got the South Africans back in front around the half-hour mark through a strong near post attempt from a tight angle, but it was parried to safety.
Vilakazi aimed to go one better than his compatriot moments later, but he too snapped wide from a clear opening inside the six-yard box.
Coach Raymond Mdaka made a change before the start of the second half and had Patrick Autata come on for Letlhaku, with the substitute nearly making an instant impact with a header in the box that sailed over the top.
Zambia continued to battle away and find moments in the closing third, but couldn’t get the better of Smythe-Lowe, while Phiri got a big chance to give Amajita the lead five minutes from time with a shot at the back-post, but he dragged well wide.
Nevertheless, Amajita settled for a share of the spoils that cemented their place at the top of Group A and sealed qualification to the last eight, where they will face the Democratic Republic of Congo.
