'What's wrong with South African players and alcohol'

After he reported to training under the influence of alcohol, Itumeleng Khune was told to consider retirement to not tarnish his reputation as prepares to face Kaizer Chief's disciplinary committee. This is what KickOff readers had to say!

What's the story?

Former goalkeeper Pelewe Delamogo criticised the Amakhosi goalkeeper for his decision making and the bad example he's setting for the younger players.

"Khune should be leading by example especially for a keeper of his calibre and at his age," Delamogo said."I mean how embarrassing is it that as club captain and the most senior player at the club he shows such behaviour."

"His career is coming to an end, and he must realise that he needs to go out the right way," he added.  "People always remember the bad things more than the good so he must be careful about that."The guy can drink but he must understand the need to respect his job."He is damaging his image and reputation now"

Reacting to the story, KO readers took to Facebook to share their thoughts on Delamogo's statements and Khune's current situation at the club.

"This guy love chiefs with his whole heart and soul the situation at chiefs affect him and he stressed that out by ending up taking alcohol at the wrong time, Itumeleng Khune is human being he should be respected everyone has his own skeleton," says Sehularo Solomon Moreosele.

"If chiefs value Khune they will give him chance to play then retire willingly," says Sheldo Yiseka Mbawula.

"This man has given so much to our team ,every body makes mistakes, the management should sit down with him finds out wats the problem, maybe the guy needs help, I really hope they will allow him to finish his career with dignity, we still love you Itu," says Nk Fish SImphiw.

"My take, this should be the starting point to uproot those within players who are bent on influencing division in the club, why are they losing games, is there a third force within the players and who us the rung leader, you send them all perking irrespective their status, its time chiefs root out instigators," says Papy Mkhonto.

"Long overdue, we saw last season he was busy throwing away games, one would swear he bet on the team losing," says Avhanamano Mavhivha.

"The best thing for the club to is to strip him of the captaincy he doesn't deserve it. Give it to someone who got leadership skills," says Irvine Siziba.

"He is not the first to report drunk at training. Chiefs never gave such players a harsh punishment from the beginning. Mathoho completed his contract under the same allegations.. Khune will finish his contract and I'm sure he will retire end of season," says Lawrence Maboreke.

"I'm a Pirates and South African fan to soccer. My question would be so what? His has made a good name and done it all to success. His a good influence and inspires his young fans. Itu thank you for being one of the greatest and may you retire well as you build South African soccer," says Reggie B T Noble.

"But guys honestly speaking what's wrong with South African players and alcohol. We have seen good players turning into something else because of alcohol. Khune should be leading by example at Naturena, the whole team captain doing such things. If he continues like this, this will be his downfall," says Sthembiso Khwela.

Meanwhile, KO readers also reacted to Orlando Pirates midfielder Patrick Maswanganyi's comments following his side's goalless draw with Richards Bay over the weekend.

The result meant that the Buccaneers dropped out of the Premiership's top eight whereas if they were to grab all three points, the Soweto-based side could have jumped numerous positions on the league table.

A victory would have also seen Pirates win three consecutive matches for the first time this season.

Maswanganyi spoke after the match and revealed that their run of inconsistency has left the team feeling dispondent.

"It's very disappointing, especially because we had started winning and now we drop points again," Maswanganyi said.

"I think it's bad for the team, also for us players and for the fans. We are very disappointed with the results.

"Things didn't come together because in the first half we started a bit slow, losing too many balls and we stared getting into the game late."

While some readers expressed that Pirates fans need to be patient as it is still early in the season, others demanded change and other players in the squad be given a chance in the first team.

Here's what they said:

"We ran out of luck guys, let's be patient things will change," says Zwelodumo Flatela.

"Management must bring back the striker coach," said Retshabile Dipopego while Bongani Bongani responded: "Remember they didn't fired him, but he resigned him self. So you need to ask your self a question. Why he resigned?"

"He is the problem this guy doesn't release the ball, look at how well we finished last season without him on the side, he is a good player very skillful but he needs to play for the team not his glory," said Page Maphakisa regarding Maswanganyi.

"Yeah, but Patrick is not giving us his A-game. If what he's giving at the moment is his best, then I think Kapinga should be given the same chance," says Emmanuel Brace.

"Ao....you can't be bashing Tito now...you were making noise about his talent just last month....no ways relax and wait to fight for top 8 finish," says Samzab Boshego.

"It's the situation you find yourselves in, when you practice penalties preparing for a league," says Simphiwe CoolRuler Gqada.

"Pirates only problem is not scoring goals.. They play beautiful football an they have a well structured team from the back. Their only downfall is their final third," says Abel Ab-Flow.

"Don't blame the coach blame management Jose laid a foundation and still you go and sign players as if you laying a foundation again? Jose said during all he needs was two quality strikers instead we went and signed midfielders sign what u don't have in the team why sign Otladisa, Baloni he is just a future ti to replace Monare, Timm, Makhaula when the time is right , players like Saleng are they consistent? No let's mix quality with leadership what Ruud Krol once created can never be replaced," writes Makhado Magoro.

"But lost only 3 matches so far this season, compared to chiefs that lost 6," says Victor Mabsa Mk.

"Pirates are toothless in the final third," said Brown Alicia.
