UEFA Champions League match report Villarreal v Liverpool 03 May 2022

Liverpool put on a stellar second-half display to defeat Villarreal 3-2 and secured their spot in the UEFA Champions League final on Tuesday night.

Ibrahim Konate, Mohamed Salah, Thiago Alcantara, Fabinho and Trent Alexander-Arnold were recalled from the Premier League win over Newcastle United on Saturday.

The LaLiga outfit managed to halve the first-leg deficit when Boulaye Da reacted smartly and intelligently to Etienne Capoue's cross and slotted into an empty net after three minutes.

Little to naught appeared in the way of chances for the Reds, with the Yellow Submarines able to monitor and picked off a few exciting balls in and around the defensive third.

To that end, the Yellow Submarine evened up the overall tie when Francis Coquelin rose above Alexander-Arnold five minutes to halftime to head home Capoue's cross.

Here are the best-paid players in this season's Champions League

Following the substitution of Diogo Jota for Luis Diaz, the Reds missed a glorious chance ten minutes in the second half to halve the advantage as Alexander-Arnold's free-kick clipped the crossbar.

The Reds did ultimately reduce the lead for control of the overall tie a little later as Fabinho came charging right of the area following a one-two and fired through Geronimo Rulli.

It fast filtered to a game of two halves well inside the midway stage after Diaz escaped the offside trap to nod Alexander-Arnold's teasing cross in off Rulli.

Rulli's difficult evening continued near the final ten minutes as he miscued a defensive clearance after rushing off his line and allowed Sadio Mane to finish in an empty net.

Liverpool targeted more goals through particular Curtis Jones and Salah, but Rulli blocked though the English giants still won and advanced to the final in Paris.
