PSL to extend season for Royal AM to catch up?

With the Royal AM fixture saga reaching its finality, there is no certainty as to whether the club can catch up on their postponed fixtures in time before the scheduled end of the season.

With a successful bidder for Royal AM, which was put under auction by SARS, set to be announced imminently, the club's players have reportedly returned to training.

Even though previous favourite, Durban businessman Chockalingam "Roy" Moodley, has reportedly had his bid halted before it was officially announced, there is certainty emerging that a successful bidder is close to being announced and therefore Royal AM will have to get back to the green grass and complete their schedule.

The PSL, however, are sitting with a serious fixture backlog regarding the KwaZulu-Natal side, which will almost not be feasible to address within the expected end of the season.

John Maduka's charges have 11 games in hand and would still need to complete another eight fixtures to get to 30 for the season.

With eight weeks remaining before the campaign officially comes to an end, it is almost impossible that Royal AM would play 19 games between anytime they get back to playing and 24 May, the official end of 2024/25.

If they were to resume playing their league matches anytime between now and next week, they would need to play at least four games per week, to make it in time for the season's final whistle.

What would make the issue even more complicated is that Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns are still involved in the CAF Champions League and the further they progress, the longer the backlog stretches.

Should the suspension be lifted, after a successful bidder is announced, the League may need to extend the season.

Bear in mind, Royal AM are also under a FIFA transfer ban and their squad would simply not be able to meet these demands, especially since they has not been training all along.

The challenge of extending the league season to accommodate Royal AM is that Sundowns can't be delayed, as they have to prepare for the FIFA Club World Cup, kicking off on 14 June.

Should the league programme be extended, the PSL would need to ensure the title race is completed so the Tshwane giants can jet off to the United States in time before their opening Group F clash against Ulsan HD on 17 June.
