Some have questioned the player's habit saying it poses a danger to opponents as they might lose an eye during a tussle for a header.
However, the former Orlando Pirates and Platinum Stars centre back tells snl24.com/kickoff that he has already started working very hard to quit the habit although it might take some time.
"I'm trying to stop [playing with a bottle cap ring seal in my mouth], but I'm taking it step by step. I really hope I succeed though it's difficult to quit," admits Gumede.
Most football players choose to chew gums during a match saying it gives them energy, but Gumede says he prefers the ring seals of bottles because they help him to focus during a match.
"It [the ring seal] helps me to focus during a match. I'm too used to playing with it in my mouth and it has never given me a problem or fallen during a match."
Gumede says he will have no choice but to adandon the ring seal should one of the PSL referees orders him to take the object from his mouth during a match.
"They [the referee] are the ones who are in charge, so I won't have a choice but to follow their orders. But so far no ref has done that," he says.
