Despite holding out Louis van Gaal’s charges for almost the entire match, the Magpies were undone with just a minute left on the clock as Young capitalised on defensive confusion at the back to net the winner and give United maximum points.
“It was a hard-fought win," the 29-year-old told MUTV and BT Sport. "We knew we had to come here and get three points and we got our reward. We had chances in the first half but just couldn’t put them away. We knew we’d get another chance - luckily it fell to me and I scored.”
The Englishman was then quick to hit out at critics who have questioned the Premier League giants over the performances of late.
“People are always going to question the biggest club in the world, but we just concentrate on ourselves,” he said. “We don’t listen to anyone else, we just listen to the manager and the staff at the club. We heard the other results and know that the teams around us are winning. So it was a really crucial win.”
Coach Louis van Gaal was pleased with his side’s fighting spirit which secured the last-gasp victory, leaving the Red Devils in fourth position on the EPL table.
"I have a fantastic group,” the Dutchman said. “They have the spirit and, in spite of all the criticism, they want to win and always play good football. Today I think we played good football."
United now turn attention to Cup matters as they prepare to face Arsenal in the quarter-final of the FA Cup on Monday evening.
