The Argentine speedster endured a difficult first season in England following his big-money move from Real Madrid, and after being excluded from United’s pre-season tour of the USA, coach Van Gaal admits he doesn’t know where the 29-year-old is, after reportedly not returning to pre-season training in Manchester over the weekend.
Following United’s 2-0 friendly defeat to PSG in the US, Van Gaal was asked where Di Maria was, to which he replied, "Maybe you know."
When the journalist said he did not, Van Gaal said, "I don't know either."
Another journalist then queried, "You don't know where he is?" and Van Gaal replied, "No."
However, PSG coach Laurent Blanc hinted that the French club may be close to sealing the deal for the winger.
"Manchester United and PSG are two big clubs and negotiations can be difficult, but we are close to the end," he said.
Meanwhile, Van Gaal also revealed his concerns over goalkeeper David De Gea, who he feels may not be in the right headspace ahead of the upcoming English Premier League season.
"We have a situation that is not favourable for David De Gea, neither for us and neither for the club that, maybe, he wants to go," said Van Gaal.
