Kaizer Chiefs badge at stake in Macufe Cup

Chiefs will take on Bloemfontein Celtic once again at Free State Stadium on Sunday looking to avenge their defeat in the same showpiece last season when Phunya Sele Sele won 1-0 courtesy of a Vuyani Ntanga goal.

An added incentive for Amakhosi is that Celtic will get to keep the trophy if they win it for a third time in a row, having won the last two editions.

"We are playing every match to win. It is in our culture to win and our stakeholders expect us to do well in all competitions," Maphosa said at a press conference for the event.

"We apply a similar checklist to all the matches that we play and the Macufe Cup is no exception." But there is more than just bragging rights at stake.

"We were also attracted by the social responsibility part of the Macufe Cultural Festival. The support for soccer development and the National Bandana Day in support of the people who suffer with Leukemia Cancer are some of the elements that align with our strategy as a responsible club," the Chiefs official added.

"On the playing side, the technical team will make their selection closer to the match day. There's one certainty though, we will walk through the Free State Stadium tunnel with eleven players that are fully aware that the Chiefs badge will be at stake,"

The Macufe Cup kicks off at 15h30 at Free State Stadium on Sunday. Both Chiefs and Celtic have won it four times.

Gates open at 11h00 with a curtain-raiser match and other entertainment. By Wednesday morning the organisers announced that 11 000 tickets had already been sold for the 40 000-capacity venue.

Tickets are available at Shoprite/Checkers and Computicket outlets nationwide in the following categories:

R30 Juveniles
R50 Open Stand
R60 Grand Stand
R2166 VIP
