Junior Khanye: Cancel PSL Player of the Season award

The League is yet to confirm if the annual PSL Awards ceremony will happen again at the end of this prolonged domestic season.

Orlando Pirates midfielder Thembinkosi Lorch is the reigning Player of the Season after he picked up the gong in Durban last year.

Khanye says there is no player this season that has done well enough to warrant that kind of recognition.

"For me there is no player that deserves to win the player of the season award this season. The Covid-19 has disturbed a lot," he tells snl24.com/kickoff.

"I thought Gabadinho from Pirates started very well but lost momentum when the league resumed. In fact the whole Pirates team lost momentum and to be a best player you needed to be surrounded by the best players.

"It disturbed him a lot. I thought he was going to be both top goalscorer and player of the season but the Covid-19 disturbed a lot of teams and players because of the stop-and-go. After the break most of the teams came back very flat.

"Sundowns are currently my favourite team but also came back flat after the break. However they have also raised up their performance judging by their last three games.

"I had huge expectations for Andile Jali this season. He is one of the best players we have in the country. I think the issues with coach Pitso Mosimane and other stuff off the field that we cannot discuss affected his performance this season.

"To be honest it's difficult to identify the player of the season. Even before the Covid-19 break no player was consistent. One game he performs well and the next game he is flat. After the break it became worse and most teams came back different than they were before.

"I believe also the issue of not having fans at the stadium has affected some teams and players. Some teams play well when there is motivation from the fans."

"But for me there is no player that deserves the player of the season award and it must be cancelled."
