In this edition of In The Spotlight, former Orlando Pirates and Ajax Cape Town midfielder Clifford Ngobeni speaks to KickOff.
Growing up, who was your idol?
"I had two, actually. The first one is the late John Moeti, known for his discipline. He really encouraged me, even though we did not play in the same position when I started my professional football career. The second idol is Tinashe Nengomasha. He played for the team and not for himself, he was selfless."
Growing up, which club did you support?
"I have always been a Kaizer Chiefs fan, even though I eventually developed feelings for Orlando Pirates. When coming up against Chiefs in the Soweto Derby, I had to put my feelings aside and focus on my role as a Pirates player."
Your breakthrough into top-flight football, where did it happen?
"I never saw football as a career initially, but my circumstances at home forced me to take that path. I had to assume the role of a breadwinner. Ajax Cape Town spotted me playing in a regional competition, and I chose Ajax over Orlando Pirates."
Who is your best friend in football?
"Stanton Lewis. I met him when we were 13. Another good friend is Mkhanyiseli Siwahla."
Anything you dislike about football?
"A lot. Our players are not well represented or taken care of. Sometimes they are blamed for drinking and not coming to training, but in actual fact, it's the club bosses who frustrate them by not paying their monthly salaries."
Your favourite player in South Africa at the moment?
"Themba Zwane. Although he is a late bloomer, he has matured into a good player."
If you could join any club in South Africa right now as a player...
"Stellenbosch or Cape Town City. Both clubs are organized and focused."
