Highlands Park confirm Moeketsi Sekola's release

Highlands Park director Brad Kaftel says the club used the right channels when releasing former striker Moeketsi Sekola.

Last month the Lions of the North announced the player's release from the club after the 30-year-old made only 10 league starts in the 2018/19 season.

According to reports, his agent Ratshibvumo Mulovhedzi says as far as he knows his client is still a Highlands Park player.

But now there is another twist in the tail. Kaftel says according to Sekola, his agent is Palesa Mkhize.

"No we have released him," Kaftel clears up to snl24.com/kickoff.

"So the story was simply that Sekola is a senior player and he just isn't in the coach's plans at the moment. And from the player's perspective I think as a senior player to come down and train and not play isn't good for his confidence. So to keep him for another season and he doesn't play, it's going to finish his career.

"I said to him look, let's rather agree a settlement and we did. We agreed a settlement, I gave him his clearance, he signed the agreement, we hugged each other and we parted on very good terms.

"You know I asked him at the time who his agent was. I said when you came to Highlands Park your agent was Ratshibvumo, he said no he is not his agent anymore. He said his agent is now Palesa, you know that same guy who is an agent of [Hendrick] Ekstein. He said no he was not using Ratshibvumo anymore, his agent is Palesa Mkhize... so the truth is with that, well that's his business, I can't tell him who his agent must be or mustn't be.

"So I don't think based on the conversation that I had with Sekola, you know he didn't feel that Ratshibvumo was his agent, but that you must discuss with Sekola.

"I think he is still a good player, he can find a club and at least get a one or two-year contract and play somewhere else and good luck to him. But what is important for Highlands is that we always finish on good terms with the players. We don't want fights, we honour the contract, if it is to be a termination it has to be negotiated and agreed on an amicable basis, and you never heard even one story of a player being disgruntled with us, never.

"We've never had a player not being paid or a player we were at the DC with. We've always agreed things up front... sign, shake hands and move on as friends, that's business you know. That's our way, that's our strategy, that's how we work."
