Gonzalo Higuain reveals why he rejected Premier League transfer in favour of AC Milan switch

Higuain, 30, joined Juventus in a then club-record €90m in 2016, after he netted a Serie A record tally of 36 goals in 35 games under the tutelage of Maurizio Sarri at Napoli.

And in his time with Juventus he maintained his prolific exploits with the Italian champions and reached a iconic moment of his career with his 100th goal in Serie A, making him only the second player after Zlatan Ibrahimovic to score over 100 goals in two of the top European leagues in the past 20 seasons.

Despite his impressive scoring record, Ronaldo's arrival as the marquee addition to launch a UEFA Champions League assault - meant the former Real Madrid attacker had to leave in order to balance the books at Juve.

Chelsea were said to be leading the chase for his signature, with Sarri the incoming manager, but 'Papita' opted to remain in Italy.

"Sarri was the only one to want me at Chelsea," he told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

"He's the best manager I had in my career. I showed all my potential with him.

"I think he is similar to Gattuso: they both want to win and that’s something I really love.

The Argentina hitman went on to laud the treatment from the 18-time Serie A champions over the course of negotiations.

"Everybody wanted at AC Milan, while in London I was only wanted by the manager," he explained.

"AC Milan insisted to sign me, Elliott did a big effort for me and Leonardo, Maldini and Gattuso know the club very well.

"I really appreciated their approach during the negotiations."
