Why Pirates need to keep Mpontshane?

Orlando Pirates legend Innocent Mayoyo believes that veteran Siyabonga Mpontshane still has something to contribute at the Buccaneers amid talk of a potential exit.

Mpontshane's current contract expires in June 2024 and so far the Soweto giants have not indicated if it will be renewed.

Pirates have Melusi Buthelezi, Sipho Chaine, Richard Ofori, and Mpontshane as their goalkeepers.

The 37-year-old has not featured in a single game for the Pirates this season and is rumored to be on his way out of the club with Cape Town Spurs believed to be interested.

"For Orlando Pirates to be a force to be reckoned with they will need a strong goalkeeping department," The former goalkeeper Mayoyo tells KickOff.

"They must learn from Mamelodi Sundowns, they never release their goalkeepers.

"I think it will be a good idea if Pirates maintain such continuity in their goalkeeping document.

"Mpontshane is still valuable to Pirates in terms of experience. He still has a huge role to play in their dressing room.

"Competition in the goalkeeping department it's what makes the other goalkeepers good.

"And I still maintain that he is a good goalkeeper. He wouldn't have lasted such a long time in the game if he was not a good goalkeeper.

"It's just that when it comes to goalkeeping only one of you can play at a time.

"I think currently he is number four in the Pirates goalkeeping list.

"I think they should extend his stay by another one year. It's better than signing another goalkeeper because even a new one will still be a fourth choice."
