Story Behind My Nickname: Section 10

In this edition of Story Behind My Nickname, former Orlando Pirates and AmaZulu FC dribbling wizard Thabo Qalinge reveals the origin behind his popular nickname "Section 10".

Qalinge remains in search of a new club since parting ways with AmaZulu at the end of the 2021/22 DStv Premiership season.

"It is something that started in eKasi, you know how guys are (laughs)," Qalinge tells KickOff.

"Yinto yase Lok'shini you know how guys are when you are growing up.

"There was this guy called Magadlaza in my Kasi here in Mofolo, out of the blue he just said from today you will be known as "Section 10".

"He was our coach at the same time and a player for our first-team.

"I was still playing in the Under-10's back then. But at the time I had no idea why he chose to callrefer to me by that name.

"I only understood when I joined SuperSport United, that in fact, "Section 10" was the nickname of the legendary Basil Gwangwa.

"And the name just suited me perfectly, even at home they call me Section 10."

Qalinge also commented on the level of the game currently.

"Maybe the focus is no longer in football, although there's plenty of tournaments in townships and they are dominated by older players not youngsters.

"Masters Sunday Leagues are the ones dominating as well, and they receive lot of support from their communities."
