Riveiro extends Pirates winless run away at SSU to a decade

Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro remained in the list of current and past coaches at the club in the last nine years who were not able to beat SuperSport United away in the league.

Pirates' six game unbeaten run was ended in a spectacular fashion by SuperSport, who hammered them 3-1 this past weekend, courtesy of a brace by youngster Shandre Campbell and another goal from Bradley Grobler.

The Buccaneers were beginning to climb up the table and missed the chance to grab second spot and momentum, ahead of their final game of the year against Carling Knockout champions Stellenbosch on Friday.

Matsatsantsa, as a result, steered four points clear of fourth-placed Pirates in second place, in a battle for a runners-up spot behind high-flying Mamelodi Sundowns.

The Soweto giants' struggles against United continued, as they are yet to beat SuperSport away in the league since 2014.

Riveiro, who inspired Pirates to a second place finish last season ahead of Matsatsantsa, says it's "painful" that their unbeaten run had to end that way.

"It's painful, that's a good thing that it's painful, it's painful for all of us, the fact that we were winning a lot of games recently, it's not helping us because we're a winning team," Riveiro told reporters.

"We're here to win games, it's not in our mind right now to lose after six games, to win every game, it was not possible (to win) for different reasons," he said.

Pirates goalkeeper, Melusi Buthelezi, who had kept five consecutive clean-sheets before conceding in a 2-1 win over Golden Arrows, prior to the match against SuperSport, was to blame for the third goal, after he gave the ball away trying to play from the back and the Buccaneers were punished by Campbell.

The Spanish tactician continued and defended Buthelezi that he's human after all.

"They are professional football players, they are here to perform and sometimes they make mistakes, we all make mistakes in our professions, right?" he asked.

"So we're not superheroes, doing everything perfect, it was a mistake, football is a game of mistakes," he added.

The last Pirates coach to beat SuperSport away in the league was former mentor Vladimir Vermezovic in 2014, with a 2-1 victory, when United were under the tutelage of former coach Gordon Igesund.
