Football hooliganism reared its ugly head on Saturday when fans stormed the pitch after Kaizer Chiefs were beaten 2-0 by Free State Stars during the Nedbank Cup semi-finals.
Players and officials had to run for cover as they were pelted with missiles from the stands, while security officers were also assaulted during the incident.
South African Police Service spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala has confirmed that two people have been arrested after the chaotic scenes at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.
"Two people have been arrested and will appear before the Durban Magistrate Court on Monday," Gwala told snl24.com/kickoff.
Social media was abuzz yesterday with video clips showing a female security officer being savagely assaulted by the fans. Gwala, though, dismissed the rumours that the security officer died during the incident.
"As far as I am concerned no-one died. There are police and security officers that were rushed to hospital after they sustained injuries during the incident," Gwala added.
