Chiefs made four changes from their defeat with Zesco United, as Ramahlwe Mphahlele returned from injury, while there also starts for Kgotso Moleko, Siphelele Ntshangase and debutant Happy Mashiane.
The match was delayed for a period of 15 minutes due to incoming spectators, but upon kick off the Amakhosi threatened first but Ntshangase shot over the top on 13 minutes.
Tornado were soon out of their shell when Siyoko’s glancing header off a free-kick forced Virgil Vries to make a fine reflex save on 21 minutes.
On the half an hour mark, Chiefs edged close to getting the opener when Leonardo Castro’s header crashed against the top of the crossbar with the Tornado goalkeeper well beaten.
The Amakhosi soon missed a good chance to go ahead when Ntshangase missed from close range after finding space inside the box minutes before the break.
In the second half, Chiefs introduced Bhongolwethu Jayiya from the bench for Mphahlele, as Ernst Middendorp looked to end their frustration.
On 56 minutes, Mashiane found space on the left side and picked out Bernard Parker in the box but the latter’s final shot flew off target.
With little happening from both sides, Middendorp made another offensive change when Dumisani Zuma replaced Mashiane as the match went into extra time.
Chiefs were ahead three minutes into extra-time when Abongile Twani sent a cross from Castro into his own net after trying to clear for a corner.
Tornado were denied a penalty after Moleko’s indiscretion due to the offside flag, much to the displeasure of the home support as Chiefs hung for the win.
