Lorch transfer follows pattern of big Pirates stars to Sundowns

On Friday, Orlando Pirates dropped a bombshell that they had struck a deal with Mamelodi Sundowns for the transfer of talisman Thembinkosi Lorch and a day later he was officially announced by the Brazilians.

The Buccaneers have built a reputation of selling their big stars to the Brazilians, while they are still at their peak, presumably before they lose their value.

Going as far back as the transfer of the late Gift Leremi, who was sold to Masandawana in 2007, amidst reports of alleged ill-discipline.

Pirates also negotiated the transfer of Lebohang Mokoena to Sundowns in 2009 after he had a fallout with former coach Ruud Krol, who initially chased him away from training and 'Cheeseboy' ended up isolated in the stands, by Mokoena's own admission.

In the same year, the Sea Robbers also sold former left-back Innocent Mdledle, whose off-the-field misdemeanours were widely reported, to the Tshwane giants.

Two years later, the Buccaneers also sensationally sold Teko Modise to Masandawana and ironically, Modise also had a fallout with former coach Krol and was no longer part of the team, with allegations of ill-discipline also hanging over his head.

Lorch also had his fair share of misdemeanours after he initially went through a disciplinary hearing and was suspended by the club in August 2020.

The former Footballer of the Season was also suspended by Pirates in November last year, after a legal process, where he was found guilty of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

However, the fact that the 30-year-old's contract was reportedly coming to an end in June is understood to have also played a big part in the exit of the attacker.

Other notable players who caused a stir after leaving Pirates to join Sundowns include Benedict 'Tso' Vilakazi, whose decision to sign for the Brazilians in 2008 after returning from Denmark did not go down well with the Buccaneers supporters.

Andile Jali also could also not maintain loyalty to the Pirates badge after he also opted to sign for the Brazilians in 2018 after he returned from Belgium.

The list of players who have played for both the Buccaneers and Masandawana is long and includes the likes of Katlego Mashego, Oupa Manyisa, Kermit Erasmus, Musa Nyatama, Gift Motupa, Benson Mhlongo and Wayne Sandilands, among others in recent times.
