In this edition of My Muti Story, KickOff chats to former Mamelodi Sundowns and Silver Stars winger Koketso Mmotong on his experiences with the cultural practice.
Who and where?
"I was playing for Silver Stars, coached by Owen Day Gama. We were playing a home game in Polokwane against Manning Rangers.
"One night, Da Gama chose three players, strikers and attackers. It was me, Dingane Masanabo, and Leonard Casner.
"It was in the middle of the night, when Da Gama took us to a half-blind old man in Venda.
"The problem started when this old man wanted to cut us with a razor blade. And as a coloured, Leonard didn't want to hear any of that, and Dingane also was against it.
"Dingane and Leonard fought with this old man until he phoned Owen. He said to Owen, I'm having a problem with your guys here.
"After speaking to Owen, the Goldman gave us some strings to tie around our thighs. Those things had a very bad smell, yoh!"
Why were you doing it?
"The problem is, he was speaking Tshivhenda, and all of us were clueless when it came to the language."
Who was the muti man?
"I didn't catch his name. The only thing I remember about the old man, is that he was half-blind, wore a shorts and was barefooted.
"Someone told us he had 10 wives. And strangely, all his wives were wearing ZCC badges."
What did you have to do?
"All our players had to play in those strings tied on their thighs, it was so uncomfortable.
"The muti man gave us 18 of those strings so we could give them to every player."
Did everyone take part?
"Only me, Leonard and Dingane had to undergo the razor part, though it ended up not happening, because of Dingane and Leonard.
"Imagine being cut with a razor blade by a half-blind muti man. We were scared he would end up cutting our blood vessels"
What stood out?
"The way our coach Owen Day Gama reacted after we lost to Rangers. I had never seen him so upset man."
What was the result?
"Unfortunately, we lost to Rangers, and Owen blamed us, saying the team lost because we didn't follow the old man's instructions.
"I believe we lost that match 3-1 or 3-0."
