“He spent seven years at the club and won nothing” - Motaung Jr hits back at former Chiefs player

Kaizer Chiefs' sporting director Kaizer Motaung Jr has responded to comments made by Sekhukhune United defender and former Chiefs player Daniel Cardoso over Amakhosi's chances for silverware.

Cardoso was among over 10 players whose contracts the Amakhosi hierarchy opted against renewing at end of last season. The centre-back joined Sekhukhune United at the start of the current season.

Speaking to media ahead of the clash between the two teams this Sunday, Cardoso commented on Chiefs' chances of lifting silverware.

The 33-year-old defender alluded that the current Chiefs squad lacks the necessary experience needed to win trophies, having released the majority of the older players.

The controversial comments did not land softly on the ears of Amakhosi supporters and speaking to Radio2000 on Thursday evening, Motaung Jr described Cardoso's comments as 'tone-deaf'.

"With all due respect, you have never seen Dr Motaung coming to radio addressing comments disgruntled [former] players or employees made but must say, Daniel's comments were a bit unfortunate," Motaung said.

"He is a player who spent seven seasons at Kaizer Chiefs as an experienced player and won nothing. That can be seen a period in our history as a club where we were least successful.

"It baffles me how he [Cardoso] would even utter the word 'titles' in anything to do with himself and Kaizer Chiefs. I think it's more of a slap in the face for our supporters when they hear  someone like Daniel saying what he said, especially because in those years he was here, he was playing all those games.

It [comments by Cardoso] was a bit tone-deaf, and again with all due respect, I do wish him well at his new club."
