Sekhukhune United reclaimed top spot in the Betway Premiership after defeating Durban City 2-0 on Saturday evening.
Gavin Hunt's charges were eager to get back on the winning trail after playing to a goalless draw and Polokwane City, while Eric Tinkler's charges had top spot in their sight after a 1-1 draw at AmaZulu on Tuesday evening.
The home side got off to the perfect start as veteran striker Bradley Grobler bagged his third goal of the league campaign by pouncing on goalkeeper Darren Keet's horrible pass and firing into the back of the net from around 20 yards out.
While City struggled to get going, the lead was doubled five minutes later when Thabang Monare got his name on the score-sheet with a rare goal, after volleying home from close range after scramble in the box.
The visitors looked to get themselves back in the contest as Samkelo Maseko was denied by goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner while Jean Lumbamba passed up a good opening ten minutes before the halftime break after firing over the target.
Hunt's charges made a bright start to the second period as they went in search of a way back into the contest, while they also brought on Saziso Magawana for Mokwena just before the hour mark to refresh their stall.
City managed to carve out an opening in the 77th minute as the lively Maseko found some space and unleashed a powerful strike that sailed inches wide of the upright.
That proved to be the final opening for the away side, as Sekhukhune held out for the win and a clean sheet.
The win takes Tinkler's men back to the top of the table going into the international break, while City suffer their first defeat of the season.
