Analysing Kaizer Chiefs and Free State Stars' CAF Confederation Cup opponents

Amakhosi were drawn to face Zimamoto of Zanzibar, while last year’s Nedbank Cup winners Ea Lla Koto will make their debut in the competition against Rwandan outfit Mukura.

Little-known Zimamoto won their first and only league title in 2016, and made their CAF Champions League debut against Ferroviario Beira of Mozambique in the preliminary round last year, winning the first leg 2-1 before a 3-1 loss saw them dumped out of the tournament via a 4-3 aggregate scoreline.

They then featured in the CAF Confederation Cup earlier this year, drawing 1-1 at home to Ethiopian side Welayta Dicha before losing 2-1 away from home to once again fall short in the preliminary round.

Zimamoto qualified for a second successive CAF Confederation Cup tournament this year after finishing second in the league last season, just one point behind champions JKU.

Heading into November’s international break, Zimamoto sat ninth in the league after six games played in their new season, having registered two wins, two draws and two losses, with only three goals scored, and three conceded, so far this campaign.

Zimamoto will face Chiefs at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Wednesday, with kick-off set for 19h30, before hosting the Glamour Boys next week.

The winner of the tie will face either Deportivo Unidad of Equatorial Guinea or Madagascar’s ASSM Elgeco Plus in the next round.

Founded in 1963, Mukura Victory Sports FC have never won the Rwandan League title, and ended 13th out of 16 teams last year, just four points above relegation. They, like opponents Free State Stars, however enjoyed a dream run to the Rwandan Cup final, where they held giants Rayon Sports to a goalless draw before emerging 3-1 penalty shootout winners to lift the cup and secure their 2019 CAF Confederation Cup berth.

Mukura have not featured in the CAF Confederation Cup since the year 2000, where they were dumped out in the first round.

Five games into the new season, Mukura are unbeaten, registering four league wins and a draw to sit second on their domestic top-flight standings, two points behind leaders APR, and last played out a 0-0 draw with AS Kigali earlier this month.

Free State Stars announced that their match against the Rwandans will take place at Bidvest Stadium on Wednesday at 15h00 ahead of the return leg next week.

The winner of the tie will face El Hilal of Sudan in the next round.
