Claasen has seven Bafana Bafana caps, and impressed in South African colours. Gordon Igesund said recently that he has his eye on the youngster.
However, it may be difficult for Claasen to earn a working visa for England. Although he was named in Gordon Igesund’s squad to face Central African Republic in a World Cup qualifier in March, he did not play, and was dropped from the squad for the recent qualifiers against CAR and Ethiopia.
After terminating his contract with Belgian side Lierse FC, Claasen has had trials at Everton and German Bundesliga side Eintracht Braunschweig and Scotish giants Celtic, and has now resurfaced at Hull.
According to thisishullandeastriding.com, the 23-year-old midfielder made “an impressive outing” for the English Premier League side on Monday, scoring one goal and setting up another in a 6-0 win at Winterton.
He was listed under the psuedonym James Armstrong on the teamsheet, but his agent Rob Moore confirms it was Claasen, as do the photographs unearthed by the snl24.com/kickoff team.
“He’s been playing at Lierse and came back from injury at the end of last season, but because he would not sign a new deal, he was played on the bench,” Moore told thisishullandeastriding.com.
“He still managed to play seven games, but he is now keen to try his hand in Europe.
“He’s at Hull to go on their training camp to Portugal and, hopefully, he can show Steve Bruce what he can do.”
Claasen is expected to feature for Hull in friendlies against Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday and SC Braga on Tuesday.
