Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has revealed why Phil Foden seemed unhappy about being subbed off during the match against Real Madrid.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has explained why Phil Foden was grumpy with him following Tuesday night's thrilling clash against Real Madrid.

It was end-to-end stuff between Real and City in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final, with the exhilarating encounter ending 3-3 .

There were six different goalscorers on the night, with Bernardo Silva opening the scoring for the English giants just two minutes in, before the Spanish giants equalised through a deflected shot by Eduardo Camavinga, which was credited as a Ruben Dias own goal.

Rodrygo then gave Real a 2-1 lead after just 14 minutes played, but the tie was just only halfway in terms of goals.

Foden scored with a stunning strike in the 66th minute to draw City level, and just five minutes later, defender Josko Gvardiol would also get on the scoresheet to give the Premier League outfit a 3-2 lead.

Potentially the goal of the night came in the 79th minute, though, when Federico Valverde netted an amazing volley off a Vinicius Junior cross to see the game end 3-3.

However, upon being withdrawn from the pitch and replaced with Julian Alvarez in the 87th minute, Foden did not seem please with his manager, and Guardiola has since explained what the issue was, and why a number of stars did not feature too.

"It's a knock. He was grumpy with me when I made a sub, which means he is OK, but he made a fantastic goal," Guardiola told TNT Sports.

"In the last meeting in the hotel, he [De Bruyne] was playing. He didn't say anything to me. But he started to feel bad and bad. Vomiting when he arrived. He didn’t feel good to play.

"One of the secrets at the high level is adapting to the chaos. There's no time to complain. Kyle [Walker] is not here, so he's not here. Nathan [Ake] is not here, so he's not here. Kevin cannot play, we play with 11. Hopefully he can be [back] next Wednesday.

"It was a really good, entertaining game. Two teams that want to attack – in different ways but they want to attack. What I love is the way we played the second half when we were 2-1 down. We controlled the game really well.

"It's Madrid. You can be 3-2 and the game is over – here it is never over. One week until our next game in Manchester – it will be sold out and they will help us score one goal. We will do the rest. And the team who is best will reach the semi-finals."
