Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is now reportedly being lined up for a top job, and is considered the "dream appointment" for the position.
The Spaniard is the Football Association's ideal candidate for the England position should current manager Gareth Southgate step down when his contract expires at the end of next year, according to the Daily Mail.

The news outlet further reports that FA officials believe Southgate could leave his current role after the 2024 UEFA European Championship, and are in the process of setting up a succession plan as a result.
Eddie Howe, Graham Potter, Mauricio Pochettino and Brendan Rodgers are all said to be in contention for the role, but it is said that Guardiola is at the top of the shortlist for the position.

A move for the Citizens boss would, however, be a complicated one as his deal with the Mancunians is only set to expire in 2025.
His wages could also present another issue, with the FA reportedly still recovering from up to £300 million (R7.2 billion) in losses experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Southgate had previously teased the idea of parting ways with England after the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, however, choosing to stay on after his side reached the quarter-finals, from which they were knocked out by France in a 2-1 defeat.

The FA have therefore not ruled out the possibility of the current England manager staying on until after the 2026 World Cup.
