The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) has issued a stern statement demanding an investigation by CAF after a referee from the country was attacked by players in the Confederation Cup.

The Confederation Cup quarter-final second-leg fixture between Moroccan side RS Berkane and Libyan outfit Abu Salim on Sunday night ended in unsavoury scenes when Egyptian referee Mohamed Marouf was attacked by players belonging the latter team.

Abu Salim has been knocked out of the competition after losing 3-2 on aggregate, but the manner in which they lost the tie incensed them, with the team seemingly taking all their frustrations out on the match official.

The main point of contention was the fact that Marouf added more than 15 minutes of stoppage time after the regulation 90 minutes while the sides were held at 2-2, with the Moroccan club scoring their winner the late into the added time to advance to the next stage of the CAFCC.

Evidently upset by this, a group of Abu Salim players stormed at the referee, kicking him and hurling insults at him upon the final whistle, as can be seen in the video clip below.

It is further claimed that they were not happy about his entire performance overall as seven yellow cards and three red cards were dished out during the encounter.

The EFA has since issued a statement on the attack on their match official, demanding an investigation by CAF into the matter.

"The Football Federation, headed by Professor Jamal Allam, sent a letter to the African Football Federation, condemning and condemning the attacks on international referee Mohamed Marouf by the Libyan Abu Salim team during their match against the Moroccan Volcano Nahda in the quarter-finals of the Confederate Championship," the statement read.

"The Football Federation, in its speech, demanded an investigation into the incident of Abu Salim's team assaulting the referee, emphasising the Football Federation's confidence in the AU in protecting its referees and maintaining their rights on and off the pitch, especially that this is not right to appear on the stadiums and in the Confederate Championship, which is one of the most powerful tournaments organised and honoured by the African Union."
