This one will shock the continent and have punters having second thoughts about their bets for this CAF Champions League quarterfinals second leg tie.

Mamelodi Sundowns play as hosts on Friday (20h00) against Young Africans, with the scores still level at 0-0 after the first leg in Dar es Salaam last Saturday.

The Brazilians ae favoured to prevail, but then, against Miguel Gamondi they have a man who only knows them but carries ‘extras’ in his back pocket.

Gamondi arrived at Sundowns in 2005 along with Cayetano Rodriguez to work as fellow Argentine Angel Cappa’s assistant.

At that time, he had already worked in Cote d’Ivoire, Libya, Burkina Faso, Morocco and Tunisia.

Then, just six months later, Cappa was sacked, with Gamondi then taking over in a co-coaching arrangement along with Neil Tovey.

Gamondi and Tovey delivered the 2005/06 league title but were then shown the door in the early stages of the next season, with Gordon Igesund then taking over.

A year later (December 2007), Gamondi was appointed head coach at Platinum Stars.

Interesting is that throughout the 18 months that the Argentine spent at Stars, he won on all his three visits to Tshwane to play Sundowns.

In his first match in charge of Dikwena in December 2007, Gamondi travelled to play the Brazilians and won 2-1 courtesy of goals from Edward Williams and Joseph Mkalipa.

The next trip to the capital city was a year later and he won 2-0 with Luis Renteria’s brace making the difference against a Sundowns team that was now coached by the late Henri Michel.

Gamondi’s third visit to Sundowns was in March 2009 and he won 1-0 in the Nedbank Cup, with Renteria on target again.

Michel was fired the next day.

So far, it has been three out of three for Gamondi, which explains why he landed walking with confidence on Tuesday having already guided Yanga to their first ever quarterfinal in the Champions League.
