Mayo targets Bafana return

South African attacker Khanyisa Mayo is happy with the progress that has been made with his football career since relocating to Algeria last year.

Mayo joined CR Belouizdad in August after Cape Town City sold him to the Algerian team for an estimated R20 million transfer fee.

The Mthatha-born star has been enjoying his best form in the CAF Champions League this season.

He was in the starting line-up as his side went down 2-1 to Orlando Pirates in a CAF Champions League group stage match at Orlando Stadium on Saturday, a result that eliminated them from the competition.

That said, Mayo has credited his new-found form to his teammates and technical team at the North African outfit.

"It took me months to settle down. But I managed to find my feet because of the coaches, technical staff, and players. They helped me to adapt more quickly to the league and the style of play in the team," said Mayo, speaking ahead of the fixture.

"It's been a journey I have been enjoying as a footballer and you have to live moments like this in football to enjoy your football every time you get such opportunities.

"With Bafana Bafana's call-up, I've been putting myself [out there], raising my hand, and knocking on the door once again, asking questions to be on the team. We will see what happens. It's a long journey, and the season is still long. God willingly, things will go through my plan," he went on.

Mayo has been used in different positions since joining, including playing as a number 10 in a Champions League match against Al Ahly two weekends ago.

His coach, Abdelkader Amrani, is happy with the way the 26-year-old has been adapting to playing different roles in the team.

"I am happy with his progress. We have to understand [that] in the beginning, it was difficult, like any other person, to integrate into a new group, but he has been working hard at training. He has a lot of potential, we do believe he will do well," said Amrani.
