The former England international was reported to have pocketed a weekly wage of £300,000 (R5.1m) at Old Trafford, where he spent 13 years after joining from Goodison Park in 2004.
Rooney then made his return to the blue half of Merseyside on a free transfer at the end of last season, going on to score 11 goals this term to sit as the club’s top scorer in all competitions.
The striker, though, had to sacrifice £150,000 a week to return to his boyhood club, Kenwright confirmed.
“The double award-winner Wayne, that was one of the greatest and shortest negotiations I’ve ever had,” the Toffees chief is quoted as saying by the Liverpool Echo.
“He was so determined to come home and, as you know, he gave up half of his salary to do so.
“And the smile on his face when Jimmy (Martin), our kit man, gave him that Everton shirt, he would need an operation to get rid of it."
