Nazeer Allie eager for Maritzburg United debut against former employers Bidvest Wits

Allie joined The Team of Choice on a free transfer at the start of the season, following the non-renewal of his contract at Bidvest Wits at the end of June.

The 33-year-old has yet to make his bow for his new employers, after being placed on a personal programme to get up to speed in terms of fitness with the rest of his teammates.

Having since come through this programme, and featured in a couple of friendlies, the veteran fullback is confident he can now begin to contribute to the Pietermaritzburg-based outfit.

“Obviously I joined a little late when pre-season was on already. Coach [Fadlu Davids] said to me that he had a programme for me to get to full fitness,” Allie told his club’s website.

“I have played a few friendly matches now so hopefully I am fully fit. Obviously you will only see when you play a competitive match.

“I have played at different clubs, different positions and I can add to the squad, and try and bring that winning mentality into the squad.

“For me I just have to focus on getting into the team, work as hard as possible and hope the coach selects me.”

Maritzburg will be hosting The Clever Boys at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Saturday evening, but running out to face his former teammates holds little significance for Allie, who is fully focused on helping the team grab their first win of the season.

“For me, I’m used to it [facing former teams]. I moved from Ajax to Wits so it doesn’t matter for me. It will be a tough game against the log leaders so we will have to be at our best to get the victory at our home stadium,” he stated.

“In football sometimes it’s difficult, you just need that first victory to get confidence. Hopefully this Saturday we can get that and kick-start our season.”
