Tlemo: I used to support Kaizer Chiefs

In this edition of In The Spotlight, KickOff catches up with former Jomo Cosmos defender Collen Tlemo.

Growing up, who was your idol?

"Bra J was my idol, and that's not just because I played under him, but because he believed in youngsters like us at that time."

Which club did you grow up supporting and why?

"I used to support Kaizer Chiefs. iKhosi had fans in every corner. I supported them because of my uncle, who was a huge fan. He would always go to places like Ellis Park to watch them play.

"Back in those days, Chiefs had the likes of Shane McGregor, Scara Thindwa, Howard Freese, and William Shongwe, who was the goalkeeper."

Who was your best friend in football?

"Isaac Shai. Even now, he still is. I just had lunch with him. He's the one who finishes my lunch."

What do you dislike about football, and why?

"I dislike one thing about football in South Africa, some club officials are not honest with players.

"Players are not treated fairly, they end up poor because of greedy football officials. These officials are the reason players die poor and are unable to put food on the table.

"Once you reach 30 years old, it's assumed you are finished. You are no longer offered proper contracts; all you get are one-year deals, regardless of how good you are. I think this is a way of robbing players."

Who is your favourite player in South Africa at the moment, and why?

"Yho! These guys are not playing exceptionally well, though there is potential in players like Relebohile Mofokeng from Orlando Pirates. I love how he's playing. I think Pirates is taking very good care of him."

If you could join any club in South Africa right now, which club would it be?

"I'd pick Stellenbosch FC."

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?

"Northern Ireland. It's a very nice place to live. I used to play there."
