In our exciting feature, How I Became a Goalkeeper, Joel Masutha reveals the origin story of how he became a goalkeeper.
Masutha who featured for the likes of Black Leopards, is currently a coach at Motsepe Foundation Championship side Venda Football Academy.

"Like most goalkeepers, I started as an in-field player, up until 1990 when our local team Mamuhohi Home Boys' goalkeeper failed to pitch up.
"The coach said, I once saw this boy doing very well as a goalkeeper playing with a plastic ball with his friends, let's try him out.
"I agreed, and then from there I never looked back. That was in Venda in Nzhelele.
"I played as a striker, I played in defence, I played every position they put me in."
Who were some of the goalkeepers you looked up to and based your game on?
"Mark Anderson, the former Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper. He was my idol, to be honest.
"The way he was dealing with crosses, the agility he made goalkeeping look easy.
"Truly speaking he was my favourite, I'd also like to model my game on his."

Who are some of the goalkeepers today who are your favourites?
"I'd still go for Itumeleng Khune, and internationally Ederson the Man City goalkeeper.
"Khune, to have the longevity that he has at the highest level says a lot about his level of professionalism.
"Also, he made the goalkeeping revolution in South Africa, because before him goalkeepers were only known for catching balls.
"But these days everyone wants to kick or deliver the ball like Khune. It showed the impact that he had, to say that the keeper must also play with his feet.

"Ederson is a goal player, and also the way he makes the build-ups he makes it easy. The way he reads the game, and also when it comes to shot stopping, he is very, very good.
"He is also fearless because most goalkeepers are even afraid to make mistakes, especially with their feet, but with him he makes it look so easy."
