Ex-Swallows coach reveals his salary

In this edition of My First Pay Cheque, KickOff speaks to former Sekhukhune United and Moroka Swallows coach Brandon Truter.

Truter reveals how shocked he was when he learned that in football, players actually earn more than coaches.

Who you signed for?

"Sanlam Santos, my first pay cheque was at Sanlam Santos, it was part of the schools development program, and I also took charge of the Under 15 team in the academy at Sanlam Santos.

"I stopped playing because of an injury. I was out on loan from Santos when I got injured at Juventus in the Mvela League."

How much was it?

"It was a thousand rand, that was my first salary in coaching. It was big. I also got married during that time so I was starting a family."

How did you celebrate?

"There were no celebrations, once I got injured, to stay in football I had to do something, so the Santos chairman offered me a coaching job.

"And yes to my surprise my salary as a coach was way less than what I used to get as a player, so it was nothing like promotion [laughs].

For yourself what did you buy with it?

"There was nothing to buy. We were raised differently we gave all our money to our parents. They would then decide what they give you [laughs]."

Did it last you the whole month?

"The club used to pick me up for training. So I had no issues when it came to transport money [laughs]."
