Sundowns pile more misery on Malesela & Gallants

Mamelodi Sundowns were too strong for Marumo Gallants after registering a 4-1 victory in their Betway Premiership clash on Tuesday evening.

Sundowns made two changes from their opening league win over SuperSport United, as Tashreeq Matthews and Aubrey Modiba took the places of Peter Shalulile and Lebohang Maboe.

Both sides were on the front foot early on but Masandawana were clinical with nine minutes on the clock after Matthews converted a cross in the box with ease.

After some resistance from Gallants, the Tshwane giants came close to doubling their lead on 20 minutes after Modiba's cutback found Marcelo Allende unmarked in the box but the Chilean blasted his shot over the crossbar.

Dan Malesela's charges committed numbers going forward and were punished on a counter-attack shortly after the half-hour mark, after Rayners, unmarked on the far post, fired home a cross by Matthews.

Manqoba Mngqithi's charges were in control of the game towards the end of the first stanza and they had a penalty appeal on the stroke of half-time after Rayners went down under a challenge in the box but the referee waved play on, as the hosts went to the break with a comfortable 2-0 lead.

Sundowns had a perfect start in the second stanza as three minutes from the interval Lucas Ribeiro Costa made it 3-0 with a finish in the box after a through ball by Matthews.

With Masandawana seemingly home and dry around the hour-mark, they rested Costa and gave Shalulile a run, in a reinforced attack.

Gallants, meanwhile, to try and get something out of the game introduced Gabadinho Mhango in place of Sekela Sithole.

However, an injury to Siwelele Sa Marumo goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi in the last 20 minutes made matters worse, as substitute shot-stopper Nicholas Mlambo made a howler trying to play from the back.

Mlambo and Gallants were punished as Masandawana were alert and Sphelele Mkhulise made it 4-0 with a shot into a gaping net.

Mhango made an impact for Gallants in the closing stages and the visitors were eventually awarded a penalty in the dying minutes after Monde Mphambaniso was brought down in the box, however the Zambian's spot was smothered in the middle of the goal by goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.

However, Mhango eventually got the consolation goal for the Malesela's troops in added time from a scuffed tap-in after a cross by Daniel Msendami.
