PSL chairman Irvin Khoza is hoping Maritzburg United and Free State Stars will put on a show in the Nedbank Cup final

Many had hoped for a Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs final, but the Team of Choice and Ea Lla Koto stunned the big guns to book themselves a date at Cape Town Stadium on May 19 (19h00). Both sides will be looking to win their first piece of silverware in the PSL era.

Maritzburg will take part in their first ever final while Stars last progressed to a final in 1999, when they were beaten by Sundowns in the Rothmans Cup.

Khoza congratulated both sides at a press conference at the PSL offices in Parktown, Johannesburg, yesterday.

“I want to congratulate Maritzburg and Free State Stars for being in the final of the Nedbank Cup. The cup final is quite historical for the two teams. As we indicated in 1996, when we repositioned the PSL, we wanted it to be unpredictable, so the result of them being in the final is welcomed,” he said.

“We hope that the two teams will give us the best final when they meet on May 19.”

A win for either team would not only mean their team’s name being engraved on the trophy, but they will qualify for the CAF Confederation Cup.

The chairman, meanwhile, congratulated Sundowns for winning the title with a game to spare.

“I also want to congratulate Mamelodi Sundowns. We will hand over the trophy on the last day of the season.”
