Former Bafana coach: Let's continue supporting Hugo Broos

The Belgian's young side have had an encouraging start to their 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign and currently lead the Group G standings.

Bafana registered a vital 1-0 home win over Ghana over the weekend after a goalless draw away to Zimbabwe in a qualifying opener in Harare.

Former national team coach Augusto Palacios is now encouraging supporters to not put any unnecessary pressure on the Belgian and his young crop of players.

"According to SAFA president Danny Jordaan, the mandate is to qualify for the next Afcon.

"Any country would wish to go to the World Cup and the latest results are a blessing for the country.

"It's a new team, a new coach and we need to allow Broos to understand the players and the country."

Palacios also detailed how prioritising the team over superstars may result in improved performances.

"Sometimes you may have too many superstars but the team does not function. Sometimes you need to mix players who would like to fight and players who like to play for their country. It makes a difference. For me, Monday's victory was good for the country.

"But we must not put additional pressure now just because we won one game and think we will now go directly to the World Cup. It's a process, and there are still too many games to play.

"Remember in football you are working for results. He had a draw against Zimbabwe, now he has won against Ghana, so we have to continue to support him. That's important. We must give credit where due.

"To win against Ghana is a very good achievement. Remember these are players from Baroka, Supersport with no single player from Pirates. No superstars. At Sundowns only Morena so it's a new team."
