Arjen Robben describes Messi, Neuer and Ronaldo as "fantastic players" after being snubbed for this year's Ballon d'Or

Robben, who came eighth in the voting for the 2013 Ballon d’Or, was included in the original 23-man list for this year’s award, but failed to make the final cut, which has been narrowed down to three players: Lionel Messi, Manuel Neuer and Cristiano Ronaldo.

"They [Messi, Ronaldo and Neuer] deserved it, because they are fantastic players," the Dutch international told NOS.

Robben himself was hopeful of making the final year after a stellar 2014, having scored 23 goals in 51 matches, yet was left disappointed at being over-looked yet again.

"It comes down to a vote, so I can't do anything about it,” he said. “It's out of my own hands. I had a great year and did everything I could. But there are a lot of players that really show great things."

Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge recently said Robben’s omission was “a shame”, yet the player himself acknowledged that the three chosen are deserving of the accolade.

"It's nice that Rummenigge respects so much and gives me some credit for the successes, but the people have chosen and they chose these three great players," he said.
