CAF has reportedly punished a Manchester United star following an incident involving Bafana Bafana.

Morocco international Sofyan Amrabat is in the governing body's bad books after receiving a two-match suspension for the red card he received during his nation's 2-0 defeat to South Africa in the round of 16 of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, according to Kifache.

The midfielder received his marching orders in the 94th minute of that tie when he was shown a second yellow card for bringing down Teboho Mokoena just outside the Atlas Lions' penalty box.

The consequent free-kick found the back of the net, crushing the hopes of Moroccans and ensuring victory and passage to the next round for Bafana.

Now, it is reported that CAF's Disciplinary Committee has handed him a suspension that will see him miss his nation's 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Zambia and the Republic of the Congo scheduled for June this year.

The Royal Moroccan Football Federation, meanwhile, is said to have settled on an appeal as its best route forward in the matter, with the body reportedly working to lower the ban to one match.

This latest development adds another stain to what many consider to be a forgettable season for the 27-year-old, who is currently on loan at the Red Devils from Serie A side Fiorentina.

There is speculation suggesting that United have decided against the option of making Amrabat's loan switch to the Theatre of Dreams a permanent one.

Since making the temporary move to Old Trafford at the beginning of the season, the midfielder has made just 22 appearances without registering a goal or an assist in a campaign that sees the Manchester club sitting in sixth place on the Premier League table after getting knocked out of the group stage of the UEFA Champions League.

United manager Erik ten Hag will, however, be looking to bounce back and push for UCL qualification when his men travel to London for a crunch EPL encounter with Chelsea on Thursday.
