An African nation has confirmed the death of a national team goalkeeper following an incident during a training session.

The Football Federation of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania (FFRIM) has confirmed the passing of U21 national team star Mohamed El Mokhtar.

According to KingFut, the player suffered a concussion following a "violent collision" with one of his club teammates at AS Douanes.

"The FFRIM mourns the death of national team goalkeeper Mohamed El Mokhtar, who passed away this Saturday morning in Nouakchott," a statement from the federation read.

"The deceased young man was known for the great love he had for his country as well as his talent, his commitment and his discipline.

"He set an example among his colleagues for his sincerity in work and professional commitment, with high morals and great respect.

"Despite his young age, he quickly moved up the goalkeeping ranks until he quickly reached the squad of the first national team.

"On this tragic occasion, we extend our sincerest condolences and sympathy to his family on this great affliction."

CAF has also issued a statement via their official website, noting the shot-stopper's tragic passing.

"The Confederation Africain de Football (CAF) has learnt of the untimely passing of Mauritanian national team goalkeeper, Mohamed El Mokhtar," it read.

"The 21-year-old goalkeeper sadly lost his life due to an unforeseen collision while at training, which resulted in head trauma that saw the young goalkeeper sadly passing.

"CAF President, Dr Patrice Motsepe has conveyed his heartfelt condolences to Mohamed El Mokhtar’s family, club and the Mauritanian Football Federation.

"May the soul of Mohamed El Mokhtar rest in peace."

Following the goalkeeper's passing, the Mauritanian Cup final between Douanes and Nouadhibou that had been scheduled for Saturday was cancelled.
